(New York, NY) -- Asthma is costing New York big bucks. State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says asthma related Medicaid costs increased 26-percent over the past five years, totaling one-point-three-billion-dollars in medical expenses and lost productivity for the Empire State. Nearly one-point-seven million state residents suffer from asthma. The highest rates are in the Bronx, Schenectady, Clinton and Fulton counties. One bit of good news -- asthma related deaths have dropped 24-percent since 2001.
