Los Angeles Approves Plan to Pay Homeowners to House Homeless

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a pilot program Tuesday that pays some homeowners to build a second dwelling on their property to house homeless people.

The Daily News reports the program allows homeowners who qualify to receive up to $75,000 to build a second dwelling or update an existing dwelling in order to house homeless people.

Details of who exactly would be housed and the selection process are still under discussion.

Homelessness spiked 23 percent to more than 55,000 people across LA County this year.

The program is expected to be completed within 18 months.
