And his eyes were bright like flames of fire. - Revelation 1:14

Christ’s piercing eyes penetrated one’s innermost thoughts and being. Peter knew what it was like to have Jesus look at him with those eyes, “like flames of fire.” After Peter had denied him, “the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered that the Lord had said . . .” (Luke 22:61). When Christ was on earth, he had the ability to look at people and make them remember broken promises and words spoken with conviction but never fulfilled!

Christ in heaven has a perfect view of everything: “Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes. This is the God to whom we must explain all that we have done” (Hebrews 4:13). He sees within as well as without: “People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at a person’s thoughts and intentions” (1 Samuel 16:7).

When I was a very small child, I can remember hiding behind a sofa, thinking no one could see me! Even God is looking for me, I said to my small self with satisfaction. I grew up to realize God never has to look. He sees me hiding; he comes to me and faces me with what he sees. Trying to hide from God is useless. It is best to acknowledge the things we both see and have him deal with the issues of our lives. There is no other sensible course of action to take, for “his eyes [are] like flames of fire.”
