“The truth is, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.” - John 14:12

What does it mean to follow Jesus’ example? Certainly we cannot do what he did. Let’s take a look at three aspects of Jesus’ ministry that teach us about how we, frail humans, can follow his example.

First, Jesus was a master teacher, and to follow his example we must obey his teachings. But Jesus’ teaching cannot be followed without Jesus’ power. We cannot live the Christian life without the Christ who lived it. People cannot be neutral about Jesus. We cannot follow his teachings without accepting the truth of everything he said and without accepting Christ himself by the Holy Spirit.

Second, Jesus lived to please his Father, not himself or other people. There will be times when we are reviled and must bless, or are forsaken and must walk alone. In such situations, we will need to keep our focus on pleasing our heavenly Father, not ourselves or others.

Finally, Jesus depended on his Father for power. If Jesus depended on God to raise the dead, we too can depend on God for any power we need. Jesus said, “Anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works” (John 14:12).

It takes a lifetime to learn to be like Jesus, but it’s worth every minute of it! His love is ours for the knowing. His strength is ours for the taking. His power is ours for the asking. As Jesus lived by the power of the Father, so can we (John 6:57).
