A Somali refugee facing multiple charges in Canada over last weekend’s attack in Edmonton, Alberta was ordered deported from the U.S. by immigration authorities roughly a year before he was granted asylum in Canada.

Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, a Somali-born refugee is accused of attempting to run down a police officer and pedestrians on Saturday, stabbing the officer several times.

The Wall Street Journal reports Sharif was held by ICE in 2011 and was ordered to be deported to Somalia by a US immigration judge.

In 2012 he failed to appear for a scheduled meeting with ICE officials and, soon after, requested and was granted asylum in Canada.
