President Obama’s controversial release last year of seven prisoners with ties to Iran as part of the nuclear deal was presented as a good will gesture.
At the time, those released were described as businessmen serving time for “sanctions-related offenses or violations of the trade embargo.”
But a new report from Politico claims some of those released were possible threats to national security. The report claims three of those released by the U.S. allegedly helped supply Iran with U.S.-made technology used in surface-to-air and cruise missiles.
Another was serving an eight-year term for conspiring to supply Iran with satellite technology. Charges against 14 other Iranian fugitives quietly released, some with links to Hezbollah and high-tech weapons dealings, were also dropped.
