The mayor of Portland, Oregon is trying to keep two planned rallies he says are "alt-right" from happening.

Ted Wheeler says the city is still in mourning over the stabbing deaths of two men who tried to intervene when a man began yelling anti-Muslim slurs at two young women on a light rail train.

Wheeler wants the federal government to revoke a permit it issued for an event Sunday near Portland's city hall and another event scheduled for June 10 in downtown Portland.

Wheeler said he’s concerned that “they’re coming here to peddle a message of hatred and bigotry.”

Even the ACLU isn’t backing up the mayor. It contends the government cannot revoke or deny a permit based on the views of demonstrators, adding “we are all free to reject and protest ideas we don't agree with.”
