Dr. Paul Carrese, Director of the Center for American Civics and Professor at Arizona State University’s (ASU) School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership (SCETL), joins the show by phone to talk about SCETL’s upcoming event Founding Values: George Washington and the Role of the Military in our Democracy, featuring guest speaker LTG (ret.) H. R. McMaster, and his upcoming book Teaching America: Reflective Patriotism in Schools, College, and Culture which will be released on May 21, 2026. Carrese shares his insights on the state of civic education in America. He discusses the importance of reflective patriotism and how it can be fostered in schools, colleges, and culture. The conversation touches on the need for a more nuanced understanding of patriotism, moving beyond the polarized and partisan views often associated with it.
