“You must fear the LORD your God and serve him. When you take an oath, you must use only his name.” - Deuteronomy 6:13

God’s clear command in Deuteronomy 6:13 is that his people are to “serve him.” But in order to serve, people need to be willing to step out of the limelight and play second fiddle.

A little couplet says, “It matters more than tongue can tell, to play the second fiddle well.” Playing second fiddle is a marvelous way to start serving others. There are so many second-fiddle positions to fill. If we would only roll up our sleeves and “have a go at it” (as we say in England). If we would but get involved wherever there is a need, then God could accomplish great things.

Just as you can’t guide a stationary car, God can’t guide a stationary Christian. We need to start going somewhere, doing something, soon! You may complain, “But it isn’t my thing to teach Sunday school, help with the food collection, mow yards, pick up old folks, count money, wash dishes, give my testimony.” Maybe not, but have you ever considered it might be his thing for you? The Lord taught me years ago that if I would stop worrying about playing first fiddle and start with second and do it well and to his glory, I would stumble over those prepared works along the way!

It starts with the fear of the Lord—which involves a hatred of individualism and pride—and with a servant’s spirit. God will work this in the human heart if we ask him to. Are you willing to play second fiddle in God’s orchestra?
