The Air Force Academy said Tuesday that racial slurs posted outside the dorm rooms of five black students at the Academy were actually written by one of those students.

The slurs were found in September at a dorm that houses students attending the academy's prep school.

The incident prompted the superintendent to warn students that racists were not welcome at the school in a stern speech that attracted nationwide attention.

In a statement, the Academy said the student who was “allegedly targeted by racist remarks was actually responsible for the act.”

The student admitted to his role and is no longer at the school.
