Group pushing voucher referendum short on money

A new public-education advocacy group seeking a referendum on a recently passed voucher law has plenty of confidence, but it is sorely lacking the sort of high-dollar support needed to fight until the end.
The process has certainly only just begun for Save Our Schools Arizona. Spokeswoman Dawn Penich-Thacker, a professor at Arizona State University, said the group was formed less than two weeks ago, so it does not yet have an official list of sponsors or committed financial backers. What it does have, she said, is strong “verbal support” and a core group of individual donors who have so far ponied up “multiple thousands” of dollars, though she wouldn’t say how much the group had raised so far.
But that did not stop the group from planning a formal announcement of the referendum campaign on Monday at 5 p.m. at the state Capitol.
