An alliance of doctors, dentists, nurse practitioners and other health providers are ramping up their opposition to single-payer healthcare in California.

In a Wednesday letter to legislators, the coalition blasted Senate Bill 562 as a proposal that “would dismantle the healthcare marketplace and destabilize California’s economy.”

It’s an escalation in the opposition to the socialized medicine legislation, under which the state would foot the bill for nearly all medical expenses.

Backers include the progressive flank of the Democratic Party and the California Nurses Assn., who are calling for the bill, currently shelved in the Assembly, to move forward.

A hearing convened by Democrats is scheduled for next week to discuss how to achieve universal healthcare in California.
