A statue of University of Virginia founder Thomas Jefferson was covered in a black tarp Tuesday night, following a student protest led by Black Lives Matter.

The protesters also displayed a sign calling Jefferson a “racist and rapist" and later marched and chanted "no Trump, no KKK, no racist U.Va.

Early on Wednesday, a statue of Francis Scott Key, the writer of the Star Spangled Banner, was defaced in downtown Baltimore, with someone painting “Racist Anthem” on the side of the monument.

One man with the city’s Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation called what the vandals are doing to national monuments “counterproductive.”

He added, “History’s messy. It’s nuanced. It’s something to talk about, not something to erase.”
