Social media is lit up with people trying to make sense of the paintings of former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michele Obama that were unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery.

The former president chose Kehinde Wiley, who is known for primarily painting black people. Wiley's painting of Obama placed him on a field of leaves and flowers for some obscure reason.

The Daily Wire and others noted that, in the past, Wiley has shown a penchant for painting pictures of black women beheading white women.

Some of these paintings are reproductions of European masterpieces depicting Biblical scenes, with black characters replacing the protagonists.

And the piece of Michelle Obama, by artist Amy Sherald, also revealed on Monday, was widely mocked on social media for not looking anything like her.
