The U.S. Supreme Court today put new restrictions on presidential powers, limiting a president's authority to staff certain top government posts in a case involving an appointment to the National Labor Relations Board.
Reuters reports a Scottsdale-based private ambulance company had challenged the makeup of the NLRB after it ruled they had violated federal labor laws by discontinuing bonus payments for some employees.
The NLRB general counsel at the time was a temporary appointment by former President Obama.
The Supreme Court upheld a lower court’s decision that Obama exceeded his legal authority in making that appointment without Senate approval.
The ruling will give President Trump and future presidents less flexibility in filling jobs that require Senate confirmation.
