U.S. Diplomatic Facility Targeted In Iraq

A drone struck a major U.S. diplomatic facility in Iraq on Tuesday amid the U.S.-Israeli air war on Iran, but there were no injuries and everyone was accounted for, according to a U.S. official and an internal State Department alert seen by Reuters. The drone hit the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center, next to the Baghdad airport, impacting near a guard tower, the internal alert from the Department seen by Reuters said. Individuals at the facility were ordered to "duck and cover", it said. A separate alert said everyone was accounted for. The State Department confirmed the center was targeted and pointed to "Iran-backed terrorist militias" but offered no other details about the incident. The U.S. and the Iraqi government are in close contact about steps to protect U.S. personnel and facilities, it added in a statement on Wednesday. The White House did not respond to a request for comment. The Washington Post first reported the incident and said a total of six drones were launched toward the compound in Baghdad and that five were shot down. It also said the attack was likely carried out by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions. Iraq condemned the attacks near the Iraqi bases but did not mention the damaged U.S. facility, according to the Washington Post. "The (Iraqi) Ministry of Defense stresses that it will not stand by as a spectator. Rather, it will firmly confront and pursue … all parties involved," the ministry said in a statement cited by the newspaper. The U.S. and Israel began attacks on Iran on February 28. Iran has responded with its own strikes on Israel and Gulf countries with U.S. bases. Raising the stakes for the global economy, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it would block oil shipments from the Gulf unless U.S. and Israeli attacks cease. The United States and Israel pounded Iran on Tuesday with what the Pentagon and Iranians on the ground called the most intense airstrikes of the war, despite global markets betting that President Donald Trump will seek to end the conflict soon. The Revolutionary Guards said it fired missiles on Tuesday evening ?at Qatar's U.S.-operated Al Udeid base and the Al Harir base in Iraq's Kurdistan. Those launches were followed by drone attacks targeting a gathering of U.S. troops at Al Dhafra air base in the United Arab Emirates and Juffair naval base in Bahrain. U.S. President Donald Trump has said the strikes were aimed to eliminate what he called imminent threats from Iran, citing its nuclear and ballistic missile programs and its support for militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah. Iran, which denies seeking a nuclear weapon, has called the attacks an unlawful violation of its sovereignty. Iran does not have nuclear weapons. Israel is believed to be the only Middle Eastern country with nuclear weapons, while Washington is also nuclear-armed. Israel says 11 civilians have been killed in Iranian attacks. Iran's U.N. ambassador said on Tuesday the U.S.-Israeli strikes had killed more than 1,300 civilians.

Norway Police Apprehend Suspects In U.S. Embassy Bombing

Norwegian police said on Wednesday they had apprehended three suspects following Sunday's bombing at the U.S. embassy in Oslo. The powerful early morning blast from an improvised explosive device (IED) damaged the entrance to the embassy's consular section but caused no injuries, Norwegian authorities have said. "They are suspected of a terror bombing," Police Attorney Christian Hatlo told reporters. Images of one of the suspects released by police on Monday showed a hooded person, whose face was not visible, wearing dark clothes and carrying a bag or rucksack.

Tornadoes Hit Indiana & Illinois

Major storms whipped up tornadoes that killed at least two people in northwest Indiana and leveled buildings in Kankakee, Illinois, authorities said Wednesday, as another round of rain, hail and strong winds made its way through the region. Several intense supercell thunderstorms moved across northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana on Tuesday, including one supercell responsible for at least four tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service office in Chicago. “Please do not come here. Do not try to help right now,” Newton County Sheriff Shannon Cothran said in a video update Tuesday night in front of a destroyed home in the small northwestern Indiana community of Lake Village. Crews rescued some people who were trapped in their damaged homes, at least 70 utility poles were knocked down and many roads are unpassable, Newton County officials said at a Wednesday morning news conference. A tornado struck a Lake Village home, killing an elderly couple, Newton County Coroner Scott McCord said in a statement. Their names have not been released. Fewer than 10 people were hurt in Tuesday's storms, according to Laurie Postma, a spokesperson for the Lake Township Volunteer Fire Department in Lake Village. Lake Village is about 60 miles (95 kilometers) southeast of Chicago and 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Kankakee County, Illinois, where at least one tornado struck Tuesday night. David Ferris, of Lake Village, said he, his wife, and their dogs “rode it out in our downstairs bathtub.” They were unscathed, except for losing power. Ferris, who works as a paramedic in a neighboring county, helped with rescue efforts and treated some who suffered cuts, scrapes and bumps to the head. “We had another house where a guy crawled out,” Ferris told The Associated Press. “He was having some trouble breathing because he was covered in house insulation.” Ferris said the local Family Dollar store was destroyed, as well as a gas station across the street. He said multiple large trees were uprooted. Jennifer Telford, 49, said she hid in her basement in Lake Village, from where she followed news reports of the storm. She didn’t hear the tornado that struck to the south, but said she heard the hail as it pelted her roof. “The siren in town didn’t go off,” she said. “The sirens outside town did.” Telford is one of the managers of a truck stop near U.S. 41. She said power at the business was returned Wednesday morning. “I know the other side of town — everything is closed due to the downed trees and power lines,” she said. About 4,300 customers in Lake Village and surrounding communities were without power late Wednesday morning, down from more than 11,000 customers at the peak of the storm, the Northern Indiana Public Service Co. said on its website. Survey crews were expected to determine the strength and number of tornadoes on Wednesday, the weather service said. In Kankakee, Illinois, the storms also produced exceptionally large hail, ranging from 3 to 5 inches (7.6 to 12.7 centimeters) in diameter. One 6-inch (15.2-centimeter) diameter hailstone may have set a new state record, the weather service said. Nine people in Kankakee County suffered minor injuries, officials there said at a news conference Wednesday. Parts of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio remained under a tornado watch Wednesday morning. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker posted on X that he'd been briefed on the storm and tornado damage. “Keeping in our thoughts all Illinoisans impacted by the severe weather — we’ll be here to help them recover,” he said. A tornado touched down near the Kankakee fairgrounds before traveling northeast into the small suburb of Aroma Park, where it caused extensive damage, the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office said. In video shared on social media, the twister rips across a field near an airport while vehicles line the road. “I want to remind area residents to check on their neighbors and loved ones but to avoid unnecessary travel, if at all possible,” Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey said in a statement.

Shutdown Impacts TSA Staffing, Airport Lines

Some of the nation’s busiest airports experienced hours-long security lines over the weekend as the partial federal government shutdown began affecting air travel. Most Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners are federal employees who must continue working without pay during the shutdown, creating staffing shortages at many checkpoints. San Francisco International Airport uses a private screening contractor under TSA oversight, a system that has helped keep lines moving despite the shutdown. Experts say the private model could be a way to protect airport security operations during funding gaps, but the TSA union warns privatization could reduce pay and worker protections and introduce security risks.

Iran’s new Supreme Leader reportedly wounded

Israeli intelligence believes Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s newly installed supreme leader, may have been lightly wounded during a joint U.S.-Israeli air campaign targeting Iran. A senior Israeli official told Reuters the reported injury could explain why Khamenei has not appeared publicly since assuming power. According to several Iranian sources, the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps pushed for Khamenei’s selection, viewing him as a leader likely to support hardline domestic and foreign policies similar to those of his father. The situation remains tense as Israeli officials continue to warn of further action. Israel Katz said any leader installed by Iran’s current leadership could be considered a potential target for elimination.

Iran Attacks Shipping, Drones Strike Near Dubai Airport

Tensions in the Middle East escalated Wednesday as Iran launched drone and missile attacks across the Persian Gulf while U.S. and Israeli airstrikes continue against the country. Two Iranian drones struck near Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest travel hubs and home to the long-haul carrier Emirates. Four people were wounded in the attack, though airport officials said flights continued operating. Iran also targeted commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies. A projectile struck a container ship in the waterway, setting it on fire and forcing most of the crew to abandon the vessel. In a further escalation, Iran’s military warned it could begin targeting banks and financial institutions across the region, raising concerns in financial hubs such as Dubai, as well as in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The developments have heightened fears of wider disruption in the energy-rich region and increased concerns about global oil supplies if attacks continue.

Trump Says U.S. Destroyed Mine-Laying Vessels After Warning Iran Over Strait Of Hormuz

The U.S. military has hit and "completely destroyed" 10 inactive mine-laying vessels, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, warning that any mines laid in the Strait of Hormuz by Iran must be removed immediately. In apparent response to media reports that Iran had begun laying mines in the strait, Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday: "If Iran has put out any mines in the Hormuz Strait, and we have no reports of them doing so, we want them removed, IMMEDIATELY! He said that if Tehran did not do so it would face military consequences, without providing details. "If for any reason mines were placed, and they are not removed forthwith, the Military consequences to Iran will be at a level never seen before. If, on the other hand, they remove what may have been placed, it will be a giant step in the right direction!" Trump wrote. He said the U.S. was using the same technology deployed against drug traffickers to "permanently eliminate any boat or ship attempting to mine the Hormuz Strait," later adding that the U.S. had hit and destroyed 10 inactive mine-laying vessels. In recent months, the U.S. has carried out a series of strikes on vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific that it alleges were carrying drugs, killing dozens of people. The Pentagon said earlier on Tuesday that it was striking Iranian mine-laying vessels and ?mine storage facilities. The U.S.-Israel war against Iran has already effectively halted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, along Iran's coast, where a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas normally passes. The top U.S. general said earlier on Tuesday that the U.S. military has started looking at ways to potentially escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, should it be ordered to do so. "We're looking at a range of options there," General Dan Caine told reporters at the Pentagon. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright posted on X that the U.S. Navy had already successfully escorted an oil tanker through the key water way, but later deleted the post. The United States has not yet escorted any oil tankers or vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters when asked about the issue at a press conference later on Tuesday. "A video clip was deleted from Secretary Wright's official X account after it was determined to be incorrectly captioned by Department of Energy staff," a department spokesperson said. Commenting on Wright's remarks, a spokesperson for Iran's Revolutionary Guards denied an oil ship had been escorted. "Any movement of the U.S. fleet and its allies will be stopped by our missiles and drones," Ali Mohammad Naini said in comments carried by Iranian state media.

White House: Rise In Energy Prices Over Iran Is Temporary

The American public will see oil and gas prices drop rapidly, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday, once the objectives of the joint Israeli-U.S. air war against Iran are fully achieved. "Rest assured, to the American people, the recent increase in oil and gas prices is temporary, and this operation will result in lower gas prices in the long term," Leavitt told reporters. Oil prices on Monday surged to more than $119 a barrel - their highest since June 2022 - as supply cuts by Saudi Arabia and other producers stoked fears of major disruptions to global supplies. Leavitt added that Trump and his energy team were closely watching the markets, speaking with industry leaders, and that the U.S. military was drawing up additional options in line with the president's directive to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. The deliberations reflect White House worries that the surge in oil prices - ?following more than a week of U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran - will hurt U.S. businesses and consumers ahead of the November midterm elections, when Trump's fellow Republicans hope to retain control of Congress.
